How to address USB distance limitation and equipment isolation in the medical industry

Today USB standard occupies a dominant position in the public and professional markets. USB is becoming a widespread standard for wired connectivity in the healthcare industry and is widely used to connect an extensive range of healthcare devices. It is fast, reliable, affordable, allows for the low power consumption and its “plug and play” feature makes it very suitable for the medical industry where device portability is essential.

In the healthcare environments medical professionals are often required to isolate medical equipment from the patient care area. There may be safety, security, privacy and/or other reasons to do so. Adnaco Extension systems (such as Acnaco-SU1 and Adnaco-S3B) provide a great solution for extending the distance between patient care area and the room where medical devices such as MRI, CT or X-ray scans are positioned.

Furthermore, in medical environments it is often required for the equipment to be electrically isolated, especially in cases where devices are connected directly to patients.

In other cases electromagnetic isolation may be required, since certain medical equipment uses radio frequency energy for diagnosis and treatment. Electromagnetic waves can cause medical devices to malfunction causing potentially dangerous situations. In addition, isolation helps to mitigate ground noise.

Also, some highly sensitive equipment such as MRI scanners should be positioned in Faraday cages such as MRI shielded rooms to protect against radio frequency interference. Otherwise signals that originate from the patient would be overpowered by other signals.

Adnaco USB 3.0 extension systems provide simple and affordable solutions for extending the distance between computers and medical devices as well as isolating medical devices where required.

Adnaco-SU1 USB 3.0 extension system is capable of extending the cable at the distances of up to 100 meters, whereas Adnaco-S3B is capable of supporting the distance extension of up to several kilometers. Both extension systems offer optical and electrical isolation that is so essential in the medical field where highly sensitive equipment is often used.

Both systems Adnaco-SU1 and Adnaco-S3B support full range of protocols including Super-Speed, High-Speed, Full-Speed and Low-Speed (USB 3.0/2.0/1.1/1.0) on the remote end. Adnaco-SU1 utilizes only Super-Speed protocol from the USB 3.0 port on the computer side and has one port on the remote end, whereas Adnaco-S3B requires PCI express port on the computer side and has two ports on the remote side.

Adnaco-SU1 supports hot plug-and-play functionality on both ends, whereas Adnaco-S3B supports hot plug and play on the USB side only.
